WILDLIFE IN THE AREA
Next to the hills, perhaps the most outstanding aspect of the west
Highlands is its wildlife. This is the land of the red deer, golden
eagles, herons, pine martens, seals and otters each with their haunts
around Lochcarron.
The area boasts five National Nature Reserves and several wildlife
centres protecting animal and plant ecologies of European importance and
the world-famous geology of the area. All this is guarded by the
Highland midge! Like them or not it is worth remembering that it is the
midges of high summer than have kept Man in his place for centuries -
and one of the main reasons why the west Highlands are among the most
unspoilt lands in western Europe.
